The Place for Electronic Solutions, Part IV

FSIP SERVICES, Remanufacturing

Welcome back for Part IV of our Service Series! Today, we will dive into Remanufacturing.

What is Remanufacturing? [Electronic] Remanufacturing, as defined by the Remanufacturing Industries Council, is a comprehensive and rigorous industrial process by which a previously sold, worn, or non-functional product or part is returned to a like-new or better-than-new condition, from both a quality and performance perspective.

Selecting and working with an Electronics Remanufacturer is like choosing your Electronics Manufacturing Service (EMS) provider. Trust is essential, you want to know that you’re not sacrificing quality or service. With almost 55-years of manufacturing and remanufacturing experience and 10,000+ part numbers remanufactured, FSIP is an established “new” parts alternative supplier. We have long-standing partnerships with leading electronic and vehicle manufacturers, rigorous reverse engineering processes/procedures, and strict quality standards for each product we handle.

FSIP remanufactured parts:

  • Are analyzed by certified electronic technicians
  • Have failed, compromised, and/or stressed components repaired or replaced
  • Are upgraded to the latest manufacturers’ specifications
  • Are rigorously bench or load tested for quality assurance
  • And are backed by a comprehensive warranty.

That’s a lot to take in. Let me take a moment to break it down for you.

The steps are simple, receive the product, review, analyze, update, test and inspect. However, the process is much more complex.

Receive Product

Each product that is received in is documented and tracked. We maintain detailed records tracking system failures and apply our learnings on future units.

Review & Analysis

Each unit is subject to Root Cause Analysis. RCA is a systematic process that identifies the underlying cause of failure vs. focusing on the symptoms. We work to find why and where the system failed, what initiated the problem in the first place, and prevent future occurrences. This includes referencing FSIP’s product log and manufacturer communications for historical known failures.

Updates

All identified issues are addressed at this stage.

  • We repair or replace known failures before the failure occurs
  • We repair or replace weakened/faulty components found through diagnosis

The process gets even better, not only is the hardware overhauled, but the software is too. If your part requires programming, we update it to the latest version of the software. This is just one of the benefits of our long-standing OEM partnerships. At FSIP, we aim to solve your future problem(s) – before it (they) ever happen(s).

Testing

Once the product has been received, reviewed, analyzed, and updated, it goes through a strenuous performance testing procedure. Product dependent, it is either bench or load tested. Bench testing is indicative of how the component will operate in a given environment, whereas load testing simulates a real-life application demand testing the components’ behavior under various conditions.  When product passes testing, it moves on to Quality Inspection. If a product doesn’t pass testing, it cycles back to RCA.

Quality Inspection

This is almost redundant at this point. Quality controls are integrated throughout each step of FSIP’s remanufacturing process but very specifically in the testing phase. Once approved and released from testing much of the process is about the component’s cosmetic appeal. Each unit must pass a physical inspection prior to being shipped out our doors.

Warranty

At the beginning of this article, I mentioned trust. Knowing that your remanufactured product is backed by a comprehensive warranty helps instill that trust. Flight Systems Industrial Products warrants to the Buyer that the product(s) and any services are free from defects in workmanship and materials for a period of twelve (12) months excluding battery chargers and some charger modules which come with a six (6) month warranty. Full details can be found here.

Remanufactured products are unique. When they are “repaired”, it’s not just a simple repair. It’s a multi-step process. The component/part is transformed, given a new life, if I can be that bold. It goes through comprehensive and rigorous inspection, testing, repair/replacement, and upgrading process, whereby it is returned to a “like-new” or “better-than-new” condition from both a quality and performance perspective. For FSIP, quality is not just the final step in the process but is instilled at every step of it.

I’ve spent this blog discussing our remanufacturing processes without even touching on the benefits of remanufactured products. Therefore, next week, I’m going to take a detour from my originally scheduled topic and focus on Remanufacturing Benefits. The Services Series is going to expand by at least one post. I hope you’ll join me again.
